End-to-end encryption with Mailvelope (PGP) Print

In addition to the PGP plugin Enigma which is already integrated in Roundcube webmail, you can also use the OpenPGP browser extension. We also recommend to install this plugin if you use our other webmail client SOgo.

Installation

Installation for Chrome-based browsers such as Google Chrome, Chromium, Brave etc.

Generate your PGP key pair

After the installation you need to create a personal PGP key pair, except you have already one, then please go to step "Import your existing PGP key pair"

  1. Click in your browser on the Mailvelope symbol
  2. Click "Lets start"
  3. Click "Generate key"
  4. For best privacy leave the Name field blank
  5. In the Email field enter your email address
  6. Choose a very good password, we recommend a passphrase. Please do not use your password for your email
  7. Remove the check from Upload public key to the Mailvelope Key Server
  8. Click on "Generate"

Congratz. You have created your PGP key pair. 

Import your existing PGP key pair

  1. Click in your browser on the Mailvelope symbol
  2. Click "Lets start"
  3. Click on "Import Key"
  4. Click on "Add file"
  5. Select your key which has usually a .asc extension
  6. Click on "Import Keys"
  7. Confirm your keys.

Congratz. You have imported your PGP key pair. 

Public key

The public key is the key which you can share with everyone. NEVER EVER share your private key!!! As soon as your partner has your public key you can communicate in a encrypted way.

To get your public key please follow the next steps

  1. Click in your browser on the Mailvelope symbol
  2. Click "Keyring"
  3. Select your key
  4. Click on "Export"
  5. Select "Public" - be careful that you do not select "Private"!
  6. Click save

We recommend to save the key with a name like public-key-name.asc

Share your key

When you want to share your key with some please follow the next steps

  1. Compose a new email and add the recipient you want to send your public key
  2. Attach your public key
  3. Send the email

Use Mailvelope for messaging

If you want to write an encrypted message with the help of Mailvelope you click on the Mailvelope icon

When you enter the recipient it should be green. That says that you can write encrypted messages to the recipient. If it is read than you need the key from the recipient.

After you ready with your text you can click "Encrypt"

Now you enter your password for the PGP key

Now you see the encrypted message in your webmailer and can send it.
